The Sphinx Who Couldn't Fly
Lila loved climbing the old palm tree behind her house. It was the tallest tree on the island, with rough bark that felt like dragon scales and leaves that whispered secrets in the wind.
One afternoon, as Lila reached her favorite branch, she heard something crying. Following the sound, she discovered a small creature tucked between the palm fronds—a baby sphinx with golden fur and tiny, crumpled wings.
"I can't fly," the sphinx sniffled. "All the other sphinxes are practicing for the Great Wind Festival, but my wings are too small."
Lila's heart squeezed. She knew how it felt to be left behind. Last year, she'd been too short to reach the coconut basket like the bigger kids.
"Maybe I can help," Lila said. "My grandfather says sometimes you need to climb before you can fly."
Every day for a week, Lila climbed the palm tree at sunrise. She taught the sphinx—who she named Sunny—to stretch her wings, to catch the breeze, to trust the air beneath her. They shared mango slices and giggles. They became the best of friends.
On the day of the Great Wind Festival, Sunny's wings still looked small. But she didn't cry.
"I'm ready," Sunny said firmly.
The other sphinxes laughed when they saw Sunny. "A baby sphinx can't join the Wind Dance!"
Lila stood beside her friend. "She's been practicing every day. Watch her."
Sunny climbed to the very top of the palm tree. When the festival wind came, she didn't flap like the others. She GLIDED, catching the air perfectly, swooping and diving with more grace than any sphinx there. The crowd gasped. Sunny wasn't strong—but she was smart, and she'd learned to work WITH the wind instead of fighting it.
That evening, as they sat in the palm tree watching the stars, Lila opened her palm. A small, perfect seashell rested there.
"For my best friend," Sunny said. "To remind you: sometimes the smallest things can do the biggest things, if they find their own way."
Lila smiled, holding the shell tight. She'd learned something too—true friends help each other find their own special kind of magic.
