The Sphinx Who Caught Lightning

Maya loved visiting her grandmother's garden in Puerto Rico. The most magical tree was the ancient papaya tree, its heart-shaped leaves dancing in the warm breeze.

One night, a storm rolled in. Thunder rumbled like a sleeping giant waking up. Maya watched from the window as lightning flashed across the sky—bright, beautiful, and dangerous.

"The papaya tree!" Maya gasped. A bolt of lightning was headed straight for it!

Suddenly, a creature appeared in the garden. It had the body of a lion and the head of a wise, golden cat—a sphinx! The sphinx held a magical racquet that looked just like Maya's padel racquet from summer camp.

*WHAP!* The sphinx swung the racquet and caught the lightning bolt like a tennis ball! The lightning didn't destroy the tree. Instead, it wrapped around the papaya tree like a glowing ribbon, making the fruit shimmer with golden light.

"Thank you!" Maya called, running outside into the warm rain.

The sphinx smiled. "I am Cleo, guardian of the magical papaya tree. For a hundred years, I've caught storms with my racquet to protect it."

"Why is this tree so special?" Maya asked.

Celo plucked a glowing papaya and sliced it open. "Because this fruit holds the sweetest dreams of everyone who's ever tasted it. Try it."

Maya took a bite. It was the most delicious thing she'd ever tasted—like sunshine and magic wrapped in sweetness. suddenly, she understood what she wanted to be when she grew up.

"A storm guardian!" Maya whispered.

Celo laughed and handed Maya her magical padel racquet. "Perhaps someday, little one. For now, keep dreaming big dreams."

That night, Maya fell asleep with papaya sweetness on her tongue and lightning in her heart, knowing magic was real, and she had found a friend in a sphinx.
