The Sphinx, The Hat, and Everything
I adjusted the vintage fedora I'd thrifted that morning, hoping it covered the DIY bangs disaster I'd created at 2 AM. First party of sophomore year, and I was already operating at maximum anxiety level. My best friend Maya texted: *u got this*
The moment I walked through the door, someone's sphynx cat—a naked, wrinkly creature named Hennessy—decided my hat was its new throne. The cat leaped from the couch, claws extended, sending my fedora flying and revealing the tragically uneven bangs I'd been hiding.
"Holy shit," someone laughed. "Your cat literally just attacked."
Then Maya appeared with a plate of nuggets from a local spot called The Red Bull, where she worked weekends. "Yo, Hennessy has beef with your hat." She handed me a spicy nugget like everything was completely normal.
The cat, now satisfied with its hat theft, curled up on someone's backpack looking proud. My bangs were exposed. I wanted to evaporate.
But then this girl Sam—junior, varsity jacket, actual cool person—sat down beside me. "Those bangs are giving art student energy," she said. "Plus, Hennessy only harasses people he actually likes. He's selective like that."
Maya nodded. "Hennessy is a reverse sphinx. Instead of riddles, he just robs people."
Sam laughed. For real laughed. The kind where your nose scrunches up and you can't stop.
Something shifted. I wasn't the girl with the bad bangs and the hat-stealing cat anymore. I was the girl who survived Hennessy's judgment and got the cool junior to laugh. By 11 PM, Sam, Maya, and I were sitting on the back porch sharing Hennessy stories and strategizing about how to get my fedora back from his clutches.
Sometimes your worst moment becomes your best opening. And sometimes a hairless cat is just doing its job as the world's weirdest friendship broker.
