The Sphinx That Stole Home

Maya's neon orange cleats scuffed the dusty baseline, her heart hammering like she'd just downed three energy drinks. varsity tryouts, sophomore year, and she was the only girl on the field who wasn't there just to watch some guy's ass in baseball pants.

Then she saw it.

Someone had spray-painted a massive sphinx on the backstop—right behind home plate. Its stone face stared down the field like it was judging everyone's swing technique. The sphinx was tagged in fluorescent orange, the same color as Maya's cleats, like some cosmic sign she belonged here.

"Nice kicks, sunshine," called Josh, the junior shortstop with the stupidly perfect hair. "But can you actually hit, or are you just here for the aesthetic?"

Maya tightened her grip on the bat. "Watch and learn, pretty boy."

That's when the cat appeared—a stray calico with half an ear and absolutely zero fear, trotting onto the field like she owned the diamond. The cat made a beeline for the sphinx graffiti and sat directly under it, tail wrapped around her paws, watching like a feline umpire.

Coach Williams blew his whistle. "Alright, Reynolds, you're up. Let's see what you got."

Maya stepped into the box, the sphinx staring at her back, the cat watching from the fence. Josh was pitching, grinning like he'd already won.

First pitch: ball.

Second: she fouled it back, barely.

Third pitch cracked off her bat—solid contact, sailing toward right field. Maya bolted for first, orange cleats flashing, the sphinx somehow watching her run. The cat stood up, stretching like she was impressed.

Maya rounded first, kept going. Josh's face dropped as she slid into second, dirt spraying everywhere. She stole third on the next pitch, the cat meowing approval from the fence.

Home run.

Walking back to the dugout, Maya caught Josh's eyes on her cleats. "Aesthetic, huh?" she grinned, pulling an orange from her bag and peeling it slowly, letting the citrus scent cut through the dusty baseball field air.

The cat finally moved, trotting over to sit at Maya's feet like she'd found her human. The sphinx on the backstop seemed to smile.

"Alright, orange," Josh said, actually nodding respect. "You're on the team."

Maya tossed a piece of orange peel to the cat. "Damn right I am."

That night, she took a photo of the sphinx graffiti, the cat sitting sentinel below it. Posted it with the caption: Sometimes you've just gotta steal home and see who follows.
