The Sphinx's Water-Hair
Lily loved exploring the woods behind her house. One hot afternoon, she followed a sparkling stream deeper into the forest than she'd ever gone before. The water made happy splashing sounds as it danced over smooth stones.
Suddenly, Lily gasped. Crouched by the stream was the most magnificent creature she'd ever seen—a sphinx! But this sphinx was different from the ones in her storybooks. Instead of golden fur, her body shone like pearls, and flowing from her majestic head was not regular hair, but streams of magical water that cascaded down her back like a glittering waterfall.
The sphinx looked sad. Her beautiful water-hair was tangled with branches and muddy leaves.
"Oh no!" Lily cried, rushing forward. "What happened?"
"A storm came through last night," the sphinx sighed, and her voice sounded like gentle rain on a roof. "The wind blew so hard, it messed up my magical hair. Now I can't return to my post at the Enchanted Lake. If I don't get back by sunset, the waters will stop flowing, and all the animals who drink there will be thirsty."
Lily's heart went out to the sphinx. "I can help! My mom braids my hair every morning."
Carefully, Lily combed her fingers through the sphinx's water-hair. It felt cool and slippery, like liquid silk. She worked patiently, untangling each muddy clump, removing each stubborn twig. The sphinx purred like a contented cat.
"You're very kind," the sphinx said. "Most children would be afraid of me."
"Why?" Lily asked, tying the final strand into a neat braid that shimmered like liquid diamonds.
"Because I'm different. Because I'm strange."
Lily smiled. "Different is beautiful. Your water-hair is the most wonderful thing I've ever seen!"
The sphinx's eyes twinkled like stars. "Thank you, little friend. You've taught me something important today—kindness sees beauty everywhere."
The sphinx touched Lily's forehead with her paw, and suddenly Lily felt splashes of cool water on her skin, though the air was warm. When she opened her eyes, a beautiful blue flower had appeared in her hand, made entirely of flowing water.
"Visit me anytime," the sphinx called as she bounded away toward the Enchanted Lake, her water-braid swishing gracefully behind her. "True friends are always welcome!"
Lily ran home with the water flower cupped in her hands. It never spilled, never dried up, and whenever she felt lonely, she could hear the sphinx's gentle laughter whispering from its petals like a distant stream.
And every time Lily helped someone who looked different, she remembered: kindness sees beauty everywhere, even in a sphinx with hair made of water.
