The Sphinx's Vitamin of Dreams
Lila loved the old palm tree at the edge of her grandmother's garden. Its trunk was covered in scratchy bark, and its leaves danced in the wind like green fingers waving hello. Every afternoon, Lila would sit beneath it, eating her orange vitamin chew and imagining adventures.
One hot afternoon, as Lila popped her daily vitamin into her mouth, something extraordinary happened. The palm tree's leaves began to shimmer and sparkle. Slowly, the bark parted like curtains, revealing a tiny golden sphinx no bigger than a kitten!
"Greetings, small one," the sphinx purred. Its fur was the color of honey, and its emerald eyes twinkled like stars. "I am Cleo, guardian of the Dream Tree. For three hundred years, I have slept within this palm, waiting for someone with enough imagination to wake me."
Lila gasped. "You're real!"
"As real as dreams, as real as courage," Cleo said mysteriously. Then she stretched her little wings and fluttered to Lila's shoulder. "Will you help me? The Great Sphinx needs our friendship."
"The Great Sphinx?" Lila asked.
"My grandmother," Cleo whispered. "She guards all the world's dreams. But she has grown lonely and forgotten. Without visitors, she's becoming too weak to hold back the nightmares."
Cleo pressed her paw into Lila's palm. A warm tingle spread through her hand. "You have something special inside you—the vitamin of imagination you take every day has filled you with magic! You can dream bigger than anyone."
Lila's heart swelled with excitement. "I'll help!"
Cleo fluttered her wings, and suddenly the garden faded. They were standing before a massive golden sphinx beneath a sky painted with swirling colors. The Great Sphinx's eyes were closed, and her stone skin looked cracked and tired.
"Grandmother!" Cleo called. "I brought a friend with the most wonderful dreams!"
The Great Sphinx opened one sleepy eye. "Tell me a dream, little one."
Lila thought hard. She remembered her adventures beneath the palm tree, her dreams of flying, of exploring new worlds, of making friends everywhere. She poured all her imagination into her words, painting pictures with her storytelling.
As she spoke, the Great Sphinx's cracks began to heal. Her eyes brightened. Her stone skin gleamed like new gold. By the time Lila finished her story, the Great Sphinx was smiling.
"Thank you, child," she rumbled gently. "Your friendship is the greatest vitamin of all."
Lila woke up beneath the palm tree, Cleo curled up on her chest. The little sphinx had become her everyday companion, and every dream Lila dreamed helped keep the nightmares away forever.
And every time Lila took her daily vitamin, she smiled—knowing that the real magic wasn't in the chewable orange tablet at all, but in the imagination and friendship she carried in her heart.
