The Sphinx's Unexpected Friend

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's attic, especially on rainy afternoons. Among old boxes and dusty books, she found something peculiar—a small wooden statue of a sphinx with emerald eyes. When she touched it, the sphinx winked!

"Hello, young adventurer," the sphinx spoke in a voice like rustling leaves. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me."

Lily's dog, Barnaby, a golden retriever with floppy ears, bounded up the attic stairs and barked happily, tail thumping against the floorboards.

"And who is this noble companion?" asked the sphinx.

"This is Barnaby!" Lily said, scratching behind his ears. "He's the bravest dog in the world."

The sphinx smiled mysteriously. "Bravery comes in many forms. Perhaps you can help me with something? In the garden below, there lives a lonely zombie named Zee. Everyone fears him because he looks different, but he only wants to be friends."

Lily's eyes widened. "A real zombie? In your garden?"

"Not the scary kind," the sphinx explained. "Zee is a magical being who was cursed to look frightening, but he has the kindest heart. He spends his days tending to forgotten flowers and helping injured birds."

Barnaby whined softly, nudging Lily's hand.

"Will you help him?" the sphinx asked.

Lily nodded firmly. "Yes! Barnaby will come too."

In the moonlit garden, they found Zee—a gentle creature with patchy green skin and kind eyes. He was carefully bandaging a butterfly's wing with a leaf. When he saw them, he tried to hide behind a rosebush.

"Don't be afraid," Lily called softly. "The sphinx told us about you."

Zee peeked out, surprised. "You're not scared?"

"Barnaby knows good hearts," Lily said, and her dog trotted right up to Zee, licking his hand.

The zombie's face lit up with joy. For the first time in centuries, someone wasn't running away.

"Friendship isn't about how you look," the sphinx appeared beside them. "It's about kindness, courage, and seeing what truly matters."

That night, Lily learned that the scariest-looking things sometimes hide the most beautiful souls, and that true friends can be found in the most unexpected places—even if they happen to be zombies, sphinxes, or brave dogs with floppy ears.
