The Sphinx's Sweet Secret
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially on hot summer days when the sun painted everything golden. That's when she found the sphinx—though not the stone kind from books. This sphinx had soft, tawny fur and bright amber eyes. He was sleeping beneath the papaya tree, his lion tail twitching gently.
"Hello?" Lily whispered.
The sphinx's eyes popped open. "Greetings, small human. I am Orion, guardian of the Sweet Grove."
Lily gasped. "A real sphinx! But... you're supposed to be in Egypt!"
Orion chuckled. "Sphinxes go where magic is needed. And this garden needs help." His ears drooped. "The orange tree won't fruit, and I'm terrible at riddles. Without its sweet oranges, the summer festival will be ruined."
Lily's eyes widened. The summer festival! All her friends would be so disappointed. "Maybe I can help!"
"But sphinxes must solve riddles to earn help," Orion said.
Lily thought hard. What did she know about oranges and papayas? Papayas were sweet and orange inside. Oranges were... orange. And both needed sunshine and...
"Wait!" Lily grabbed a ripe papaya from the tree above them. She cut it open with her pocketknife. The inside was bright orange, just like the oranges the tree should grow. "The papaya and orange are cousins! They both love the sun and sweet water."
She scooped out the papaya seeds and placed them gently around the orange tree's roots. Then she poured her water bottle over both. "Together, they're stronger. Like friends!"
Orion watched, mesmerized. The ground began to glow. Tiny green shoots sprouted from the orange tree. Within minutes, small oranges appeared, blushing bright orange in the sunlight.
"You did it!" Orion bounded over, nuzzling Lily's cheek. "That wasn't a riddle with words—that was a riddle of the heart!"
Lily grinned. "Sometimes the best magic comes from kindness, not cleverness."
From that day on, Lily visited Orion every summer. They'd share papayas and oranges under the trees, and the sphinx never forgot that the sweetest magic of all is friendship.
