The Sphinx's Sweet Secret

Lily loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon after school, she'd grab her favorite glove and run to the park. But today was different. Today, her baseball had rolled into the mysterious garden behind old Mrs. Higgins' house — the place everyone said was magical.

Lily tiptoed through the tall grass until she reached the most beautiful tree she'd ever seen. Hanging from its branches were dozens of bright orange papayas, glowing like tiny suns. At the base of the tree sat not a cat, but a tiny sphinx no bigger than a kitten, with emerald-green wings and wise amber eyes.

"You seek what you lost," the sphinx purred, stretching like a cat. "But first, you must answer my riddle."

Lily's heart fluttered. "I'm ready!"

"What has stitches but cannot sew, flies through the air but has no wings, and brings joy whether caught or thrown?"

Lily thought hard. Then she smiled. "A baseball!"

The sphinx's eyes twinkled. "Correct!" She reached behind a papaya and pulled out Lily's baseball. "But wait — there is more." She plucked a ripe papaya and offered it to Lily. "The sweetest fruit for the sweetest heart. You see, little one, I've watched you play. You always cheer for your teammates, even when they strike out. True champions lift others up."

Lily's cheeks warmed. "Can I come visit you again?"

"Whenever you like," said the sphinx. "But remember — the real magic isn't in my riddles or this sweet papaya. It's in the kindness you show others every day."

That summer, Lily became not just the best player on her team, but the best teammate. And sometimes, when the other kids weren't looking, she'd slip behind Mrs. Higgins' garden to share papaya stories with her winged friend. Because the sphinx was right — the sweetest magic of all is friendship.
