The Sphinx's Sweet Secret

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially on hot summer afternoons. The best part was the old stone sphinx that sat near the back fence, half-covered in vines. Grandma said it had been there for a hundred years.

One day, while nibbling a ripe papaya under the oak tree, Lily noticed something strange. The sphinx's stone eye seemed to twinkle.

"Hello," she whispered.

The sphinx's mouth opened. "Hello, young one. I am Sandara, and I have been waiting for someone kind enough to share their papaya."

Lily's eyes grew wide. She broke off a piece of the sweet orange fruit and offered it to the stone creature. Sandara ate it with delight.

"Thank you! You are kind. But now I need your help. A terrible lightning strike three nights ago broke the magic cable that connects my heart to the Underground River. Without water flowing through my ancient veins, I will turn to dust by sunset."

Lily gasped. "What can I do?"

"Only someone small and brave can crawl through the tunnel behind me and reconnect the cable. It's dark and spooky, but I know you're brave."

Lily's heart thumped. She was afraid of dark places. But she looked at Sandara's sad stone face and knew what she must do.

She squeezed through the narrow opening behind the sphinx. The tunnel was indeed dark and damp. She could hear water dripping somewhere ahead. Her fingers found a thick old cable dangling from the ceiling, its end sparking with tiny flashes of blue light.

"You can do this," she told herself.

She crawled deeper, her knees scraping against stones. Finally, she saw a glowing blue pool ahead—the Underground River. A socket in the wall waited for the cable. With all her might, she pushed the cable into place.

WHOOSH! Magical water rushed through the cable. The tunnel lit up with beautiful blue light. Lily scampered back outside.

Sandara was glowing! "You did it! You saved me!" The sphinx's stone skin transformed into golden fur, and she came alive.

"Thank you, Lily. You faced your fear to help someone in need. That is the bravest thing anyone can do."

From that day on, Lily and Sandara had many adventures. And whenever Lily felt scared, she remembered: being brave doesn't mean not being afraid. It means doing what's right even when you are.
