The Sphinx's Sweet Secret

Lila lived on an island where magic grew like weeds. Every morning, she climbed the tallest palm tree to watch the sunrise paint the ocean pink and gold. But Lila had a secret wish—she wanted to find the legendary Stone Sphinx, said to grant one precious wish to anyone kind enough to solve its riddle.

One Tuesday, as Lila braided her curly brown hair beneath the palm fronds, she spotted something glimmering in the distance. Following the sparkle through the jungle, she discovered a clearing filled with papaya trees heavy with golden fruit. In the center sat the Sphinx, carved from ancient gray stone, its eyes closed as if sleeping.

"Hello?" Lila whispered. The Sphinx's eyes snapped open, glowing warm amber.

"I have waited many years for someone who comes not with greed, but with curiosity," the Sphinx rumbled like gentle thunder. "My riddle: What must you give away to keep it forever?"

Lila thought and thought. She picked a ripe papaya and offered it to the Sphinx. "I don't know the answer, but everyone deserves something sweet."

The Sphinx smiled, and its stone face softened. "You didn't answer my riddle, child. But you showed me something better—kindness without expecting anything in return."

The Sphinx granted Lila's wish anyway: whenever she braided someone's hair, they would feel loved for a whole day. Lila returned to her village, and soon children lined up for her magical braids. Even grumpy old Mr. Henderson left with a smile and flowers in his white hair.

Years later, Lila's daughter climbed that same palm tree, hair blowing in the breeze, watching for magic. And somewhere in the jungle, the Sphinx waited, papaya trees swaying gently around it, ready for the next kind heart to find its way home.
