The Sphinx's Sweet Riddle

In a land where sand dunes touched the sky, there lived a young sphinx named Sophie. Unlike all the other sphinxes in her family, Sophie was shy. She didn't like to ask tricky riddles to travelers who passed by the pyramids. Instead, she spent her days watching the desert clouds and wishing for a friend.

One warm afternoon, something remarkable happened. A brown bear came walking through the desert sand. His name was Barnaby, and he was far from his mountain home.

"Hello there," said Barnaby, with a friendly smile. "I've never seen a creature quite like you before."

Sophie's golden wings fluttered nervously. "I'm a sphinx," she whispered. "But I'm not very good at being one."

Barnaby sat down beside her. "What do sphinxes do?"

"We ask riddles," Sophie admitted. "But I can never think of any good ones."

The bear reached into his fur and pulled out something round and bright—a perfect orange he had brought from his journey. "Would you like to share my orange? It's very sweet."

Sophie's eyes lit up. She had never seen an orange before. As they sat together eating the juicy fruit, Sophie suddenly laughed.

"What's orange and sweet and brings friends together?" she asked.

Barnaby thought for a moment. "This fruit?"

"Yes!" Sophie cheered. "I finally made a riddle!"

The young sphinx learned that day that being a good friend was better than being tricky. Barnaby stayed in the desert, and he and Sophie became the best of friends. She never needed to ask difficult riddles again, because the best riddle of all was how two different creatures could become such wonderful friends.

And whenever they shared an orange together, they would always smile, knowing that friendship is the sweetest magic of all.
