The Sphinx's Sweet Riddle
Lily lived on a tiny island where the sun always seemed to be kissing everything hello. Every morning, she would sit beneath her favorite palm tree, listening to the ocean sing songs to the shore.
One day, something magical happened. As Lily was braiding her wild curly hair beneath the palm, the ground began to shimmer. Suddenly, a golden sphinx appeared — with the body of a lion, wings of an eagle, and the wise face of someone who had watched over the island for a thousand years.
"Greetings, small one," the sphinx rumbled gently. "I have been sleeping since your grandmother's grandmother's time. The scent of something delicious woke me."
Lily's eyes grew wide as saucers. "I have papaya!" she exclaimed, holding up the orange-fleshed fruit she had just picked. "Would you like some?"
The sphinx's amber eyes sparkled. "Ah, papaya! My favorite. But first, you must answer my riddle. I have forgotten it over my long sleep."
Lily nodded bravely.
"What has orange inside but green outside, grows toward the sun but roots in the earth, and when you share it, makes friends appear?"
Lily thought hard, looking at the papaya in her hands. Then she smiled — a bright, sunshine smile.
"It's papaya!" she cried. "And friendship! Because I'm sharing mine with you!"
The sphinx let out a laugh that sounded like wind through the palm leaves. "Correct! And you taught me something more important than the answer — kindness."
Together, they shared the sweet orange fruit as the sun set, painting the sky in shades of mango and dreams. And from that day on, Lily knew that magic wasn't just about sphinxes appearing from thin air. The real magic was in small acts of friendship, shared under the palms where the sun says hello every morning.
