The Sphinx's Sweet Papayas

Lily loved her parents' iphone. Every day after school, she'd play games and watch funny videos. One afternoon, while playing a mysterious new game called 'Sphinx Quest,' the screen shimmered like rainbow sprinkles.

Suddenly, Lily wasn't in her living room anymore. She stood in a magical garden with trees bearing bright orange papayas the size of basketballs. The sweet, tropical scent filled the air.

"Hello there!" rumbled a friendly voice.

Lily looked up—way up! A golden sphinx sat beside a papaya tree. But instead of being scary like in movies, she had sparkling purple eyes and a warm smile. Her wings shimmered like butterfly wings.

"I'm Cleopatra," said the sphinx. "Would you like a papaya?"

Lily had never seen a papaya before. Cleopatra gently sliced one open. Inside, it was bright orange with tiny black seeds, looking like a starry night sky.

"It's sweet like sunshine," Cleopatra said.

Lily took a bite. "Wow! It tastes like mango and strawberry had a party!"

Cleopatra laughed, and her laugh sounded like wind chimes. "You're the first person to visit my garden in three hundred years. Everyone's too busy with their..." She pointed at Lily's pocket.

Lily's iphone was still there, glowing with a game notification. Suddenly, she felt shy. She'd been so focused on her phone that she hadn't noticed how beautiful this magical place was.

"I'm sorry," Lily said. "I didn't mean to be rude. Your papayas are amazing, and your garden is beautiful. I should have looked around first."

Cleopatra smiled. "That's the problem with those glowing rectangles. They show us tiny worlds, but we forget to see the big wonderful world right in front of us."

She handed Lily another papaya slice. "Would you like to hear the secret of the sphinxes?"

Lily nodded, forgetting all about her games and videos.

"The real secret," Cleopatra whispered, "is that magic isn't in screens or games. It's in sharing sweet things with new friends."

They ate papayas together until the sun began to set, painting the sky pink and gold. When Lily hugged Cleopatra goodbye, the sphinx whispered, "Visit anytime. But maybe leave the glowing rectangle at home?"

Back in her room, Lily looked at her iphone. She turned it off and ran to the kitchen. "Mom, Dad! Can we buy papayas? I want to show you something magical!"

That night, as Lily fell asleep, she could almost smell tropical sweetness and hear wind-chime laughter. Sometimes, she discovered, the best adventures don't need a screen at all.
