The Sphinx's Summer Game

Lily and Max loved summer afternoons. The kind with golden sunshine stretching long across the grass, perfect for their favorite thing in the world—baseball. They'd grab their gloves and run all the way to the old field behind Willow Creek, their sneakers thumping against the warm earth.

But today was different. Today, as they rounded the bend near the sparkling water of the creek, they saw something impossible. A great golden creature sat atop the biggest rock, its lion body shimmering like honey in the sun, its wise face watching them with curious amber eyes.

"A sphinx!" Lily whispered, dropping her bat.

The sphinx nodded, its mane ruffling in the gentle breeze. "I am Cleo," she said, her voice like wind through chimes. "I've watched you children playing your running game for many summers. It looks... delightful."

"Baseball," Max said, finding his courage. "Would you like to play?"

Cleo's eyes twinkled. She'd waited centuries for someone to ask. The sphinx joined their game, her golden paws handling the bat with surprising grace. When she hit the ball, it sailed over the willow trees and splashed into the creek with a perfect *plop*.

They played until sunset painted the sky pink and orange. Cleo taught them ancient riddles between innings. Lily and Max taught her how to slide into home plate.

"Tomorrow?" Cleo asked as the first stars appeared.

"Every tomorrow," Lily promised.

And so the sphinx who had guarded lonely riddles for thousands of years finally found what she'd been missing—not someone to solve her puzzles, but friends to share the simple joy of a summer game. Some treasures, she learned, aren't gold or secrets at all. They're the moments spent running bases under the sun with people you love.
