The Sphinx's Stormy Secret
Lily loved rainy days. The sky turned purple and grey, and everything felt magical. One afternoon, when lightning flashed across the clouds like glittering ribbons, she saw something strange in her attic window.
A creature sat on the rooftop—golden fur, wise eyes, and the body of a lion with the head of a human. A sphinx!
"Come closer, small one," the sphinx spoke in a voice like rustling leaves. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to visit during a storm."
Lily pressed against the glass. "Are you... real?"
The sphinx smiled. "As real as your dreams. But I'm lonely. My friend needs help."
Lightning crackled brighter now, turning the attic into a flickering room of shadows and gold. The sphinx explained that her friend, a gentle creature named Zane, had been cursed. Everyone called him a zombie because he moved slowly and his skin looked pale and grey. But he wasn't scary at all—he was just different.
"He's kind and loves to garden," the sphinx said sadly. "But everyone runs away when they see him."
Lily grabbed her yellow raincoat. "Let's go meet him!"
Hand in paw with the sphinx, Lily followed the path of lightning through the enchanted garden behind her house. There she found Zane—slowly planting flowers with his careful, gentle hands. His skin was grey, yes, and his eyes looked sleepy, but he smiled when he saw them.
"More friends?" Zane whispered happily.
Lily realized that Zane wasn't a zombie at all. He was just someone who moved at his own pace and looked different from others.
The sphinx had been protecting him from people who didn't understand. But Lily didn't run away. She knelt beside Zane and helped him plant rainbow-colored seeds.
"Different isn't scary," Lily said, watching lightning dance above them. "Different just means you're special."
That night, Lily made two new friends. And whenever lightning flashed across the sky, she knew it was the sphinx and Zane, reminding her that true friends look past what's on the outside—and that the best magic is kindness.
The storm had brought her the greatest gift of all: understanding that being different makes you beautifully unique, just like each lightning bolt that streaks across the sky.
