The Sphinx's Stormy Secret

Lily loved her old iphone. It held pictures of her grandmother, her dog Buster, and all her favorite games. One rainy afternoon, she sat by the park pond, tapping the screen when suddenly—a flash of lightning crackled through the sky!

The bolt struck the water, and steam hissed everywhere. When the fog cleared, a creature sat on a lily pad: a sphinx, but small as a cat, with golden fur and wings like a dragonfly.

"You dropped something," said the sphinx in a voice like chimes.

Lily gasped. Her iphone had fallen into the pond! She reached for it, but the water had turned to shimmering light.

"The lightning made a doorway," the sphinx explained. "Your phone floats in the World Between Moments. To retrieve it, you must answer my riddle—but first, call your grandmother. She misses you."

Lily's eyes widened. She had been too busy playing to call Grandma in weeks. Suddenly, the iphone felt less important than the voice on the other end.

"I'll call her right now," Lily promised. "But I don't have a phone."

The sphinx smiled mysteriously. "Perhaps that's my riddle: What connects hearts across distances but has no wires?"

"Love!" Lily cried.

The water rippled. The sphinx tossed the iphone through the air. Lily caught it—and it worked perfectly.

"Wait," Lily called as the sphinx began to fade. "What's your name?"

"I'm the Guardian of Forgotten Things," came the whisper. "Remember: things break, but love endures. Call your grandmother."

Lily ran home through the rain. She called Grandma every week after that. And sometimes, during lightning storms, she visited the pond, just in case a small winged sphinx needed reminding that friendship matters more than any phone in the world.
