The Sphinx's Starlight Vitamins

Lily loved running through her grandmother's garden at twilight, when fireflies blinked like tiny fallen stars. But tonight something magical glowed between the rosebushes — a creature with the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman.

"I am the Sphinx," the creature purred, her eyes swirling like galaxies. "And you must be the brave one who solves my riddle."

Lily's heart thumped like a drum. "What happens if I get it wrong?"

The Sphinx smiled, and something sparkled in her paw — tiny crystals that looked like captured rainbows. "Then I must share my secret with you. These are starlight vitamins. Each one holds a different kind of magic."

Suddenly, a massive bull with constellations twinkling on his back trotted from the shadows. He looked fearsome, but his brown eyes were gentle as summer pools.

"This is Orion," said the Sphinx. "He comes every night seeking courage vitamins. Would you like to try one?"

Lily nodded slowly. The Sphinx pressed a glowing crystal into her palm. When she swallowed it, warmth spread through her like drinking sunshine. Suddenly, she understood animals' thoughts! The bull was lonely.

"I'll be your friend!" Lily cried, wrapping her arms around Orion's massive neck. The bull nuzzled her, his nose as soft as velvet.

"True friendship," said the Sphinx wisely, "is the strongest vitamin of all. It gives you courage when you're afraid, light when it's dark, and makes impossible things possible."

Every twilight after that, Lily came running back. She and Orion raced through meadows while the Sphinx watched, her galaxy-eyes bright. Sometimes they flew past the moon, leaving star trails behind them.

And when other children asked Lily why she glowed at night, she would wink and whisper, "I take my vitamins — but not the kind you find in bottles."
