The Sphinx's Star-Oranges
Lily loved exploring the woods behind her house, especially with Barnaby, her scruffy brown dog who could sniff out magic anywhere. One afternoon, Barnaby's ears perked up and he trotted toward a part of the forest Lily had never seen before.
There, nestled in a circle of ancient oak trees, sat a creature that took Lily's breath away. It was shaped like a sphinx from storybooks, but instead of stone, it was made of sunset colors—shifting shades of purple, pink, and gold. Its wings sparkled like captured stars.
"Welcome, young seeker," the sphinx purred, its voice like wind chimes. "I am Cleopatra, guardian of the Star-Orange Tree."
Lily gasped. Behind the sphinx grew a small tree with oranges that glowed like tiny suns.
"Every hundred years," Cleopatra explained, "these star-oranges ripen. They contain Vitamin Wonder—the magic that makes imagination come alive."
Barnaby whined softly, nudging Lily's hand.
"Ah!" said the sphinx. "Your dog knows the secret. But you must answer my riddle first: What shines brighter than stars but lives inside your heart?"
Lily thought hard. She looked at Barnaby's loving eyes. She thought about how she felt when she painted pictures or told stories.
"Dreams!" Lily cried. "Dreams shine brighter!"
The sphinx smiled, and her colors swirled with delight. "Correct!" She plucked a glowing orange and handed it to Lily. "Share this with your faithful companion, and together you will see worlds unseen."
Lily and Barnaby each took a bite. Suddenly, the forest transformed—trees danced with crystal leaves, flowers sang songs, and friendly creatures appeared. They spent hours in Vitamin Wonderland, making new friends and having adventures.
"Remember," Cleopatra whispered as they prepared to leave, "the real magic isn't in the orange. It's in the courage to dream and the love you share with your true friend."
Lily hugged Barnaby tight. She knew the best adventure wasn't the magic Vitamin Wonder—it was never having to explore alone.
