The Sphinx's Splash Challenge
Emma loved summer evenings, especially when her dad set up the baseball pitching machine in their backyard. She practiced hitting home runs while her little brother Sam splashed in their above-ground pool, giggling as the water sprayed everywhere.
One starry night, as Emma wound up for her biggest swing yet, the baseball soared high over the fence—and into the mysterious neighbor's yard that no one ever visited. Emma's heart raced. She had to get it back!
She crept through the hedge, expecting an ordinary backyard. Instead, she found something extraordinary. The baseball had landed beside a tiny stone sphinx the size of a garden statue, but this sphinx had glowing amber eyes that twinkled like fireflies.
"You possess a powerful swing, young one," the sphinx purred in a voice like warm honey. "But do you possess true courage?"
Emma trembled but stood tall. "I-I think so."
"Then prove it," said the sphinx, and suddenly the neighbor's pond transformed into a shimmering portal pool filled with sparkling water that reflected stars that didn't exist in the sky. "Jump in and answer my riddle, and your baseball shall return. Fail, and you shall remain here forever."
Emma thought of her dad waiting for her, of Sam's laughter, of her team's championship game tomorrow. She took a deep breath and leaped into the magical pool.
The water was warm and sweet, like summer sunshine. As she floated, the sphinx spoke: "I have hands but cannot clap. I have a face but cannot smile. I have numbers but cannot count. What am I?"
Emma closed her eyes and remembered the clock in her classroom. "A clock!"
"Correct!" The sphinx smiled, and suddenly Emma was back in her own yard, the baseball landing softly in her glove.
"Wait!" Emma called to the sphinx. "What's your name?"
The sphinx winked. "I'm Felix. Come back tomorrow—and bring your brother. I love games, and I've never learned to play baseball."
That night, Emma drifted asleep dreaming of sphinxes, splashy magic pools, and the greatest baseball game the world had ever seen.
