The Sphinx's Spinach Secret
Lily was playing in her backyard when something strange happened. Her golden retriever, Barnaby, started barking at an old stone statue that had always sat in the corner of the garden.
"What is it, boy?" Lily asked, patting his head.
Suddenly, the statue began to glow. It was a sphinx—with the body of a lion and the head of a wise human. The stone cracked and fell away, revealing a magical creature inside.
"Greetings, young one," the sphinx rumbled in a voice like distant thunder. "I have slept for three thousand years, and I am terribly hungry."
Lily's eyes went wide. "What do sphinxes eat?"
"Spinach," the sphinx said. "But not ordinary spinach. It must be the freshest, most magical spinach in the world, grown only in the enchanted garden beyond the zombie forest."
"Z-z-zombie forest?" Lily stammered.
The sphinx chuckled and pulled out something shiny from its lion mane—an iPhone! "Do not fear. The zombies there are not scary. They are simply lonely vegetables that came to life, waiting for someone to dance with them. Here, take this magical phone. It will guide you."
Lily looked at Barnaby. "Are you ready for an adventure?" Barnaby wagged his tail so hard his whole body shook.
Hand in paw (well, paw in hand), they followed the iPhone's glowing map through the forest. Sure enough, cheerful zombies emerged from the trees!
"Dance with us!" they called, doing the robot and the moonwalk. Lily and Barnaby danced too, laughing until their sides hurt. The zombies were so happy that they showed them the secret path to the enchanted garden.
There, glowing spinach grew in every color of the rainbow. Lily picked the most beautiful bunch—leaves that sparkled like emeralds.
Back home, the sphinx ate the spinach and grew stronger. "Thank you, Lily. You were brave enough to make friends, and kind enough to help a stranger." The sphinx touched her forehead with a paw, and suddenly Lily could understand what Barnaby was thinking!
"I love you, Lily!" Barnaby's voice said in her head.
From that day on, Lily learned that sometimes the scariest things just want to be your friends—and that adventures are always better with a dog by your side.
