The Sphinx's Spinach Riddle

Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every summer afternoon, he'd grab his worn-out glove and run to the dusty diamond behind his house, dreaming of hitting the perfect home run.

But Leo had a secret fear. He could never seem to hit the ball when it mattered most. Every time the pitch came zooming toward him, he'd squeeze his eyes shut and swing too early.

"You'll never be a real player," the neighborhood bullies teased. "Not with that spinach stuck in your teeth!"

Leo stomped home, tears stinging his eyes. His grandmother was waiting at the kitchen table with a giant bowl of spinach salad.

"Eat your greens, Leo," she said with a wink. "The ancient Egyptians believed spinach gave magical strength."

Leo rolled his eyes but ate the salad anyway. That night, as he drifted to sleep, he heard something strange. A low rumble like thunder, but different. Deeper. More mysterious.

He crept outside and gasped. A sphinx was sitting on home plate! Her lion body glowed golden in the moonlight, and her human face looked kindly at Leo.

"I am Cleo," the sphinx said in a voice like soft bells. "I've watched you play baseball, young Leo. You have courage, but you lack confidence."

Leo's jaw dropped. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things," Cleo replied. "I will grant you one wish. But first, you must answer my riddle."

The sphinx's eyes sparkled like stars as lightning flashed across the sky. "I can make you strong as ten men, make your dreams come true. What am I?"

Leo thought hard. He remembered his grandmother's words about the ancient Egyptians. He thought about how scared he felt when he stepped up to the plate, and how he wanted so badly to be brave.

"Is it... spinach?" Leo guessed.

Cleo's laughter sounded like gentle rain. "Correct! But the real magic isn't in the vegetable, Leo. It's in believing in yourself."

The sphinx touched Leo's forehead with her paw. A warm tingle spread through him, like he'd just eaten the biggest bowl of spinach in the world.

"The magic was always inside you," Cleo whispered as she began to fade. "Remember: true strength comes from courage, not spinach!"

The next morning, Leo stepped up to the plate. The pitch came flying toward him. He didn't squeeze his eyes shut. He swung with all his might, and...

CRACK!

The ball soared over the fence. A perfect home run.

Leo grinned, touching his forehead where the sphinx had blessed him. Sometimes, he realized, the strongest magic is simply believing you can do it.
