The Sphinx's Special Vitamin

Leo stood in the outfield, his baseball glove feeling too big. The other kids laughed when he dropped the ball again.

"Maybe I should just go home," he whispered.

That's when he noticed the old stone statue behind the backstop. It looked like a sphinx from his storybook - lion body, human face, mysterious smile. But this sphinx held a baseball in its paw instead of a riddle scroll.

Leo stepped closer. The sphinx's eyes twinkled like tiny stars.

"Young player," the sphinx spoke, her voice like wind chimes. "I've watched you drop the same ball ten times. But I also see something else."

"What?" Leo asked.

"You keep trying. That's the bravest thing of all." The sphinx opened her paw to reveal a glowing orange tablet. "This is a special vitamin. Not for your body - for your courage."

Leo took it carefully. It sparkled like sunshine.

"But," the sphinx continued, "this vitamin only works if you remember what true courage means."

Leo popped it in his mouth. It tasted like strawberry dreams and summer wishes.

Suddenly, he wasn't afraid anymore. But not because the vitamin made him perfect. Instead, Leo understood something wonderful: being brave meant trying even when you might fail.

The coach called his name. "Leo, you're up to bat!"

He walked to the plate, his heart full instead of heavy. The sphinx winked at him.

Leo swung at the first pitch - and missed. But he just smiled. The sphinx was right. Trying was what mattered.

The next pitch came. Leo connected perfectly. The ball sailed over the fence - a home run!

But Leo didn't run around the bases cheering. He ran to the sphinx first.

"Thank you!" he said.

The sphinx's smile grew wider. "The vitamin just showed you what was already inside you, Leo. You've always been brave. You just needed to believe it."

That day, Leo learned the best lesson of all: magic vitamins are wonderful, but believing in yourself is the greatest power of any.

And every time he plays baseball now, he waves to his sphinx friend, who reminds him that trying - not just winning - makes you a real champion.
