The Sphinx's Special Supper
Lily squinted at the endless sand before her. She had wandered too far from her family's tent during their Egyptian vacation. Now she stood before a magnificent golden pyramid, its stone surface gleaming like honey in the sun.
Suddenly, a voice rumbled from nearby. "Who approaches my favorite pyramid?" Lily spun around and gasped. Sitting between two swaying palm trees was a stone sphinx—except this one was alive! His lion tail swished lazily as his eagle wings fluttered.
"I'm Lily," she whispered, "and I think I'm lost."
The sphinx's human face softened. "I'm Amun. I've guarded this pyramid for three thousand years, but I've never had a friend visit me." He lowered his magnificent stone head. "Would you like to see something magical?"
Lily nodded vigorously. Amun led her behind the pyramid, where a small garden grew in the shade. But these weren't ordinary plants—leaves of emerald green spinach shimmered like tiny jewels. "My special spinach," Amun explained proudly. "It makes me strong enough to create magic."
Just then, storm clouds gathered overhead. CRACK! A bolt of lightning struck the ground beside them. Lily screamed, but Amun's eyes blazed with power. He scooped up some magical spinach and swallowed it whole.
With a mighty roar, Amun's wings unfurled. He created a shield of golden light that protected them from the lightning's fury. Rain poured down, but they stayed dry and warm beneath his glowing protection.
"The lightning can't hurt us together," Amun said gently. "Real friendship is the strongest magic of all."
When the storm passed, the most beautiful rainbow Lily had ever seen stretched across the sky. Amun plucked a leaf of his special spinach and handed it to her. "For you, my friend. Whenever you feel scared or alone, remember: you have a sphinx friend who believes in you."
Lily ate the spinach—it tasted like sunshine and chocolate mixed together! As she made her way back to her family's camp, she realized something wonderful: sometimes getting lost leads you to exactly where you need to be.
That night, as Lily drifted off to sleep, she whispered into the dark, "Thank you, Amun." And somewhere in the desert, beneath the palm trees and beside the ancient pyramid, a stone sphinx smiled.
