The Sphinx's Sleepy Friend

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially the secret corner behind the towering palm trees. Their long leaves danced in the breeze like green fingers waving hello.

One sunny afternoon, while running through her favorite hiding spot, Lily discovered something magical. Between two palm trunks sat a tiny stone sphinx, no bigger than a teddy bear, with sparkling emerald eyes.

"Hello there," Lily whispered, kneeling down. The sphinx blinked!

"I've been waiting three hundred years for someone to find me," the sphinx said in a voice like wind chimes. "My name is Cleo, and I need your help. My best friend got stuck in a rather embarrassing spell."

Lily's eyes widened. "A spell? Like magic?"

Cleo nodded. "My friend Zed was practicing magic tricks and accidentally turned himself into a zombie. Not a scary zombie – just a very slow, sleepy one who forgets things. He's shuffling around the garden somewhere, and I need help finding him before sunset, or he'll stay that way forever!"

Lily jumped up. "I'll help! Let's go!"

Together they searched. Behind the rosebushes, under the oak tree, past the vegetable patch. Finally, they found Zed near the compost bin, walking in slow circles and muttering, "Braaaiins... I mean... friends?"

Zed looked like a regular boy, but he moved as if he were wading through honey. His eyes were half-closed, and he kept forgetting what he was saying.

"Zed!" Cleo cried. "You're safe!"

The little sphinx performed a counter-spell with a wave of her paw. Zed blinked rapidly and shook his head. "Whoa! I was stuck in that zombie spell for three hours! I couldn't think straight, and everything felt like slow motion."

"That's why we never practice magic without reading the whole spell book first," Cleo said gently.

Lily smiled. "Everyone makes mistakes. The important thing is helping friends when they need it."

From that day on, Lily visited Cleo and Zed every afternoon. They had tea parties under the palm trees and practiced simple magic tricks together. And Zed never tried another zombie spell again – but he did become quite good at making flowers bloom with a snap of his fingers.

Sometimes the best adventures happen right in your own backyard, especially when you're brave enough to say hello to something magical.
