The Sphinx's Sleepy Friend

sphinxzombiecat

Lily's cat, Whiskers, always knew the best secrets. One moonlit night, he led her through the garden gate and into the Whispering Woods, where fireflies danced like tiny stars.

"Meow!" Whiskers called out, and suddenly, the trees parted.

There, sleeping on a bed of soft moss, was the most unusual creature Lily had ever seen. It had the body of a lion, huge golden paws, and the head of a wise woman with sparkling eyes.

"A sphinx!" Lily gasped.

The sphinx woke up and stretched. "Hello, young friend. I am Cleo, and I have a problem. My friend Zara has been cursed by a grumpy wizard."

"What kind of curse?" Lily asked.

Cleo pointed to a nearby cave. From the shadows stumbled a green girl with messy hair and sleepy eyes. She moved slowly and clumsily, bumping into rocks.

"Is she... a zombie?" Lily whispered, remembering stories from her older brother.

"No!" Cleo laughed warmly. "Zara is under a Sleeping Spell. She looks like a zombie because she's so tired she can barely move! The wizard made her stay awake for seven nights and seven days."

Zara yawned so hugely that birds flew out of her mouth. "So... sleepy..." she mumbled.

Lily's heart went out to her. Everyone needed sleep! Even magical creatures.

"I know what to do!" Lily said. She pulled a shiny silver whistle from her pocket—her grandmother's gift for calling lost things home. "This whistle plays a lullaby that only tired hearts can hear."

She blew three soft notes. A gentle melody floated through the forest, sweet as honey and warm as sunshine.

Zara's eyes closed. She swayed, then curled up on the moss. Within moments, soft snoring filled the air.

"Thank you, Lily," Cleo said, touching her nose to Lily's forehead. "You didn't run away or fight. You showed kindness. That's the strongest magic of all."

Whiskers purred proudly as Lily curled up beside them, watching the fireflies dance.

Sometimes, the scariest-looking problems just need a little kindness and a good night's sleep.

Lily learned that day that courage isn't about being brave—it's about caring, even when things seem strange or scary.

And she and Whiskers visited their magical friends every night after that, bringing sweet dreams and friendship to the Whispering Woods.
