The Sphinx's Silly Secret

Emma loved to sneak downstairs at midnight. With her fluffy dog Barnaby padding quietly beside her, she felt like a real spy on a secret mission. They'd tiptoe past the kitchen where Mom had left spinach cooling on the counter—Barnaby's nose would wrinkle every time.

One magical night, Emma discovered something incredible in the garden. A baby sphinx sat crying behind the oak tree! His golden fur sparkled like sunshine, but something was wrong.

"What's wrong?" Emma asked, kneeling beside the magical creature.

"My mane!" the sphinx sobbed. "It's my most special hair, and it's completely tangled! I can't fly home to Egypt like this."

Emma gasped. She'd read about sphinxes in her storybook—they were guardians of secrets and riddles! But this sphinx was just a kid like her.

"I can help!" Emma said. "But first, you have to answer my riddle."

The sphinx perked up. "Really?"

"What's green and leafy but makes muscles strong?" Emma grinned.

"SPINACH!" the sphinx cried. "But wait—how does that help?"

"It doesn't," Emma laughed. "I just wanted to see if you knew riddles too. Now, let me fix your mane."

Emma gently combed through the sphinx's golden hair with her fingers, while Barnaby licked the sphinx's cheek to make him feel better. Ten minutes later, the sphinx's mane flowed smooth and beautiful again.

"Thank you!" he said, hugging Emma and Barnaby. "I'm leaving you something special."

He tapped Emma's forehead with his paw, and suddenly Emma could understand what dogs were thinking!

That night, as they crept back to bed, Emma heard Barnaby's first thought: *Emma, you're the best spy ever.*

Emma smiled. Some secrets are even better when shared with your best friend.
