The Sphinx's Silly Riddle

spinachpalmhatsphinxfriend

Lily hated spinach more than anything in the world. Every night at dinner, she'd hide the green leaves under her napkin when Mama wasn't looking. But today, the spinach in her garden had grown enormous — taller than Papa! The leaves shimmered with an emerald glow Lily had never seen before.

Curious, she stepped closer. Her palm brushed against a leaf, and suddenly, the ground rumbled. From beneath the spinach patch, a creature emerged — not quite a lion, not quite a person, but magnificent and mysterious. It had the body of a golden cat and the wise face of an ancient being.

"I am the Sphinge of the Garden," the creature announced in a voice like wind through chimes. Lily knew about sphinxes from her storybooks. They asked riddles!

The sphinx's golden eyes twinkled. "I have been sleeping for one hundred years, waiting for someone brave enough to touch the magic spinach. You have awakened me, small friend. Now, you must answer my riddle to make a wish."

Lily's heart pounded. "What's the riddle?"

The sphinx smiled mysteriously. "What can you hold in your palm, give away freely, yet always have more of?"

Lily thought and thought. She looked at her garden hat, blowing in the breeze. She thought about all the toys she owned. Then she remembered sharing her cookies with new boy at school yesterday, and how happy it made both of them.

"Friendship!" Lily cried out. "You hold friends in your heart, and you can make new friends everywhere you go!"

The sphinx roared with delight, shaking the spinach leaves. "Correct! You are wise beyond your years, young friend."

"For my wish," Lily said bravely, "I wish that the spinach at dinner would taste like chocolate cake!"

The sphinx laughed. "That's a very silly wish, but sometimes silly wishes are the best kind." And with a sparkle of magic, Lily's wish was granted.

That night, Lily discovered something surprising — magical chocolate spinach wasn't nearly as good as the real thing, especially when shared with someone you love. Some adventures, she learned, are better than wishes, and true friends are the greatest magic of all.
