The Sphinx's Silly Hat
Lily found the old orange hat behind her grandmother's attic trunk. It was fuzzy and bright, with a ribbon that sparkled like captured sunshine. When she put it on, something magical happened—the attic walls melted away, and suddenly she stood in a desert of golden sand.
Before her rose a great stone sphinx, but not like the ones in books. This sphinx wore the goofiest grin Lily had ever seen.
"Greetings!" the sphinx rumbled kindly. "I've been waiting centuries for someone with such a splendid hat."
Lily giggled. "You can talk?"
"Of course! But only to hat-wearers," the sphinx winked. "I'm Clara. What's your name?"
"I'm Lily. Are you... lonely here?"
Clara's stone face looked suddenly sad. "Very. Everyone who comes runs away when they see a giant lion-lady. But you stayed."
Lily sat down in the sand. "I'm new in town. I don't have any friend yet either."
"Friend," Clara repeated warmly. "What a lovely word. Would you be my friend, Lily?"
"Yes!" Lily cheered. "But how? You're made of stone."
Clara's eyes twinkled. "Touch your hat to my nose and make a wish."
Lily did, wishing with all her heart that Clara could play.
POP! Clara suddenly shrank to the size of a big cat, her stone turning soft as orange fuzz. She purred and nuzzled Lily's hand.
"Now we can have adventures!" Clara pounced happily. "I'll show you secret treasures!"
They played until sunset, racing sand dunes and finding glittery gems. When Lily's mother called her for dinner, the desert faded back into the attic.
But there, curled on the rug, was a small fuzzy creature with sphinx-like smile and an orange ribbon around her neck.
"I came with my hat," Clara whispered. "Best friends forever?"
Lily hugged her tight. "Forever."
And sometimes, if you look closely, you can still see them playing—Lily in her orange hat, and her very best friend, running through adventures only true friends can find.
