The Sphinx's Secret Wish
Lily brushed her teeth and stared at the small goldfish bowl on her nightstand. Goldie swam in lazy circles, her orange scales shimmering in the lamplight. Tomorrow was the annual neighborhood pool party, and Lily felt nervous about swimming in front of everyone.
That night, Lily dreamed she was floating in her backyard pool, but the water had turned into liquid starlight. When she opened her eyes, she wasn't in her pool anymore—she stood before a magnificent sphinx made entirely of golden sand, with wings like a sunset.
"Welcome, Lily," the sphinx rumbled kindly. "I am the Guardian of Wishes. But first, you must solve my riddle."
Goldie suddenly appeared beside her, now the size of a dolphin, swimming through the air like it was water. "I'll help you!" the fish bubbled.
The sphinx spoke: "I'm green and leafy, good for your heart, but children often push me aside. What am I?"
Lily thought hard. Spinach! She remembered how her grandma always said it gave her muscles like a superhero. "Spinach!" she shouted.
"Correct!" The sphinx's wings sparkled. "You may make one wish."
Lily's dad's iPhone suddenly chimed from her pocket—she'd brought it into the dream by accident. The screen showed a picture of her grandmother, who lived far away and couldn't visit for the pool party tomorrow.
"I wish my grandma could be at the pool party tomorrow," Lily said, her heart full.
The sphinx smiled, and sand swirled around them. "Your wish shows love, not fear. That is the bravest wish of all."
When Lily woke up, her phone rang. It was Grandma! "I booked a surprise flight, sweetie! I'll be at your pool party tomorrow!"
Lily looked at Goldie, who winked at her. Some sphinx magic, she realized, isn't just about wishes coming true—it's about the love that makes them matter. And the best adventures are the ones you share.
