The Sphinx's Secret Wish
Lily loved exploring the old mountains behind her house. One hot afternoon, she found a hidden cave she'd never seen before. Inside sat a golden sphinx with kind, sad eyes.
"Hello, little one," the sphinx said softly. "I've been waiting for a friend."
Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"
"All creatures can talk if someone listens," the sphinx replied. "I am Solara, and I have been alone for three hundred years."
Lily sat beside the magnificent creature. "That's too long to be alone."
Solara nodded. "I guard the magical orange blossom that blooms only when lightning strikes during a full moon. Tonight is the night, but I must watch it alone—no one has ever wanted to stay with me."
"I'll stay!" Lily said immediately. "I'm not afraid of storms."
They waited together as the sky darkened. Rain began to fall, dancing on the cave roof like tiny fingers. Then came the lightning—a brilliant flash that made the whole cave glow.
"Look!" Solara cried.
A single orange blossom had opened on a stone pedestal. It glowed like a tiny sun, filling the cave with warm, golden light.
"It's beautiful," Lily whispered.
Solara's eyes filled with tears. "No one has ever seen it with me before. Thank you for being my friend."
The blossom's magic lifted into the air and swirled around them. Suddenly, Lily understood: some treasures are better shared than kept alone.
"Will you come back tomorrow?" Solara asked hope.
"Every day," Lily promised. "Friends don't leave friends alone."
And she never did. Because the best magic isn't lightning or orange blossoms—it's having someone who cares about you.
