The Sphinx's Secret Wish
Lily's golden retriever, Barnaby, had the most remarkable nose. He could smell rain three hours before it fell. He could sniff out lost teddy bears and hidden cookie jars. But one sunny afternoon, Barnaby discovered something magical.
In the dusty attic of Lily's grandmother's house, Barnaby began scratching at an old trunk. Inside lay a crystal sphere that shimmered like captured starlight. When Lily touched it, the attic walls dissolved into golden sand.
"Hello, small one," a gentle voice rumbled.
Lily gasped. Before them stood a magnificent sphinx — the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and the wise face of a woman. Her eyes sparkled like ancient constellations.
"I am Cleopatra," said the sphinx. "For three thousand years, I have guarded the secret of true friendship. But I have never had a friend myself."
Barnaby wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled. He approached the sphinx fearlessly and rested his fuzzy chin on her giant paw.
The sphinx's eyes widened. "A dog? The most loyal creature on Earth?" She smiled, and warm sand swirled around them like pixie dust. "Perhaps I have searched in the wrong places."
Cleopatra explained that she had asked countless travelers her famous riddle, but they had all tried to outsmart her instead of know her. "Friendship isn't about answers," she whispered. "It's about questions asked together."
Lily understood immediately. "That's what makes Barnaby special. He doesn't care if I'm smart or rich or important. He just wants to be near me."
The sphinx nodded, and her golden wings unfurled. "You have taught me something no riddle ever could." She pressed her paw to the crystal sphere. "Now I can finally sleep in peace, knowing the secret of friendship is safe in your hearts."
Sand swirled faster, and when it cleared, Lily and Barnaby were back in the attic. The crystal sphere now glowed softly on the trunk.
That night, as Barnaby curled up at the foot of Lily's bed, she understood what the sphinx had learned. True friends don't ask riddles to test you. They simply stay beside you, loyal and true, like the very best dog in all the world.
