The Sphinx's Secret Vitamin
Mia loved climbing the ancient palm tree in her backyard. Its rough bark scratched her hands, but she didn't mind. She called it Papa Palm because it had stood guard over her family for three generations.
One Tuesday afternoon, as Mia rested in the palm's curved leaves, she heard a tiny sneeze.
"Bless you," she said automatically.
A creature the size of a kitten peeked around the trunk. It had the body of a lion, wings of a hawk, and a wise little face. A sphinx!
"I'm Zephyr," the sphinx said sadly. "I've been guarding your family for seventy years, but I'm fading away."
"What's wrong?" Mia asked, reaching out her palm. Zephyr rested his warm forehead against it.
"The Great Vitamin," Zephyr whispered. "It grows only in the Enchanted Garden beyond the clouds. Without it, I'll turn to stone by sunset."
Mia's heart pounded. "We have to find it!"
Zephyr spread his wings. "Climb on, little guardian."
Together they soared through cotton candy clouds, past rainbow fountains, until they reached the Enchanted Garden. But the Great Vitamin grew on the highest branch, guarded by a riddle-loving dragon.
"Only those who answer correctly may pass," the dragon rumbled. "What has roots as nobody sees, is taller than trees, up, up it goes, and yet never grows?"
Mia thought hard, remembering the palm tree at home.
"A mountain!"
"Correct," the dragon nodded, stepping aside.
The Great Vitamin glowed like a tiny golden star. Mia plucked it carefully, feeling it pulse with warmth in her palm.
They raced home as the sun began to set. Zephyr swallowed the vitamin and instantly grew stronger, his fur becoming shiny and bright.
"Thank you, Mia," Zephyr said, nuzzling her hand. "You showed me that true friends help each other, no matter how impossible the quest seems."
From that day on, Mia and Zephyr had many more adventures, but nothing could compare to the day they saved each other—one with courage, the other with friendship.
