The Sphinx's Secret Summer

Lily loved swimming in her grandmother's backyard pool. Every summer, she'd spend hours practicing her dives and floating on her back watching the clouds drift by.

One afternoon, while swimming laps, Lily noticed something strange. Around the pool's edge, tiny golden sparkles danced in the sunlight. Curious, she swam closer and gasped.

There, perched on the diving board, sat a miniature sphinx no bigger than a kitten. Instead of a human face, it had the sweetest little smile, and its wings shimmered like morning dew on spiderwebs.

"Hello, young swimmer," the sphinx said, its voice like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone who truly loves the water."

Lily blinked water from her eyes. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things," the sphinx replied mysteriously. "But I'm terribly hungry. Could you help me?"

"What do you eat?" Lily asked, climbing out of the pool.

The sphinx's eyes lit up. "Papaya! The sweetest, sun-ripened papaya from your grandmother's garden."

Lily's grandmother grew the most delicious papayas. Lily rushed to pick the ripest one, its orange skin spotted with golden freckles. When she returned, the sphinx did something magical—it grew to the size of a large dog!

Together they shared the papaya, which tasted sweeter than sunshine itself. The sphinx told Lily stories about ancient Egypt, where sphinxes once guarded temples and asked riddles to travelers.

"But my favorite kind of magic," the sphinx said, "is friendship. For thousands of years, I searched for someone kind enough to share their papaya with me."

Lily smiled. "You can come swimming with me anytime."

And every summer after that, Lily and her sphinx friend spent hours swimming together, eating papaya, and having the most wonderful adventures.

The moral? Sometimes the most magical friendships begin when you're kind enough to share what you have—even if it's just a papaya and a swimming pool.
