The Sphinx's Secret Summer
Lily found the old iPhone under her grandmother's bed. It had no signal, no apps, just one strange photo of a golden sphinx sitting by a blue pool.
"That's my favorite picture," Grandma smiled. "The Sphinx of Sunshine Valley. She loves papaya season."
Lily touched the screen. WHOOSH! The room spun like a carnival ride. When it stopped, she stood in a valley filled with palm trees dropping sweet papayas into a sparkling pool.
A creature with a lion's body and human face peeked from behind a papaya tree. "You're here! Finally!" The sphinx did a little dance. "I'm Sunny, and I have a big problem."
"What's wrong?" Lily asked.
"Everyone here can swim except me," Sunny sighed. "The mermaids, the fish, even the turtles! But I'm too afraid."
"I can teach you!" Lily said. "My swim coach showed me how."
Every day that magical summer, Lily returned through the iPhone to teach Sunny. They started with blowing bubbles in the shallow end. Sunny's whiskers twitched with nervousness, but she kept trying.
"Kick your legs like you're running!" Lily called. Sunny kicked up such a splash that papayas fell from the trees!
By summer's end, Sunny swam across the whole pool. She even dove for shiny pebbles. The mermaids clapped, and fish jumped in celebration.
"You taught me to be brave," Sunny said, hugging Lily with sandy paws. "The secret wasn't swimming—it was trying."
Grandma found Lily sleeping with the iPhone that night. In her dream, Lily saw Sunny swimming in races, wearing a papaya swimsuit.
Sometimes bravery is just letting a friend hold your hand while you learn something new. And sometimes, the best teachers are the ones who need us most.
