The Sphinx's Secret Strike
Marcus stood at the plate, baseball bat trembling in his grip like a lightning rod about to get struck. The entire junior varsity team was watching, and he could feel Coach Miller's eyes drilling holes in his back.
"You got this, kid!" someone yelled, but Marcus's sneakers were already running on overdrive, his heart doing that thing where it felt like it might actually explode out of his chest.
Then he saw it—a cat, this ancient, grumpy-looking tabby, sitting calmly behind the backstop like it owned the entire field. The cat had been showing up to every practice for weeks, always watching from the same spot, always with this weirdly knowing expression. Like a sphinx guarding some ancient baseball wisdom.
Marcus's best friend Kiana called it "The Baseball Sphinx." She'd tried to pet it once and gotten a look that said, *I have seen generations of players strike out. You are nothing.*
The pitcher wound up. Marcus's mind went blank—except for the cat. The cat's eyes narrowed. Lightning cracked across the sky, storm clouds rolling in fast.
*CRACK.*
Marcus didn't even feel himself swing. But when he looked up, the ball was sailing toward the fence. The cat dipped its head once, almost like approval. His teammates were screaming, someone was already rounding the bases, and for the first time in his life, Marcus wasn't the kid who froze under pressure.
"YO MARCUS!" Kiana yelled from the dugout. "You see that?! The Sphinx blessed you, bro!"
Later, when everyone had left and the first drops of rain were falling, Marcus walked back to the backstop. The cat was still there, now cleaning its paw with total indifference.
"Thanks," Marcus whispered.
The cat paused mid-lick, flicked its tail once, and vanished into the storm like it had never existed. Marcus stood there in the rain, grinning like an idiot, already running toward where his real life was finally starting.
