The Sphinx's Secret Stream
Maya's ethernet cable lay coiled like a dead snake on her bedroom floor. Again. Her third attempt at becoming a Twitch streamer had been thwarted by the universe—or at least by Comcast.
"You literally cannot be serious," she groaned, flopping onto her purple duvet.
Her phone buzzed. Sasha: 'u coming or nah?'
Right. The mall. Where Kai and his friends would definitely be. Maya stared at her setup: the gaming chair she'd saved three months of babysitting money for, the ring light that made her feel like an influencer, and the stupid cable that refused to connect her to the internet.
She grabbed her beat-up Converse. Whatever. She'd deal with the cable later.
The food court was a minefield. Maya spotted Kai immediately—laughing with that orange-haired sophomore from the debate team, the one who always talked about cryptocurrency like she'd invented it. Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like someone was squeezing it with cold hands.
She and Kai had been something last semester. Not dating, but... something. Now she couldn't even look at him without remembering how he'd ghosted her after homecoming.
"Yo, Maya!" Sasha waved from their table by the pretzel place. "You look like you're about to throw up. You good?"
"I'm bear-ing it," Maya muttered, sliding into the booth. "Get it? Like bearing witness to my own cringe?"
Sasha rolled her eyes so hard it looked painful. "That was terrible. Even for you."
But then her expression softened. "He's not worth it. You know that, right?"
Maya's throat tightened. "I know. But like... what if I'm just unlovable? What if there's something wrong with me?"
The question hung between them, heavy and real.
That night, Maya tried the cable one more time. Just to see. And somehow—magically—it worked.
Her stream had three viewers. Two were bots. But the third was a user named 'sphinx_who_riddles'.
'Your setup is mid,' sphinx_who_riddles typed. 'but you're funny. keep going.'
Maya smiled. Maybe the bear-ing witness thing had been lame. Maybe the cable nightmare had been ridiculous. But she was here. She was trying. And somewhere out there, a sphinx was watching.
