The Sphinx's Secret Storm

Lily hated spinach. Every time her mom served it, she made a yucky face. But her dog Barnaby loved it—and Barnaby would eat anything!

One stormy evening, Lily was reading in her room when *CRACK*! Lightning flashed so bright it turned everything purple. Through her window, she spotted something glowing in the garden.

Barnaby barked wildly. Lily grabbed her raincoat and ran outside.

There, among the petunias, sat a stone sphinx the size of a garden gnome. But as another bolt of lightning struck, the sphinx opened one golden eye.

"Hello, small human," the sphinx rumbled. "I have traveled through storms and centuries, seeking the answer to my riddle."

Lily's heart pounded. "What riddle?"

The sphinx rose, stretching wings made of mist and moonlight. "What is green and leafy that gives you strength beyond measure, yet children everywhere push it away?"

Lily gasped. "Spinach! But why is that the answer?"

"Because," the sphinx said softly, "the things we think we dislike often hold the greatest magic. I was once a child who refused to eat his vegetables. Now I am bound to wander until I learn to try new things."

Barnaby nudged the sphinx's paw. The sphinx smiled—a crackle of tiny lightning.

"You," the sphinx told the dog, "would eat anything without judgment. You are wiser than I."

Lily felt sorry for the sphinx. "Maybe... maybe if you tried spinach with an open mind, you could break the spell."

The sphinx considered this. "You are brave to suggest this. Perhaps you are the true answer to my journey—not knowing the riddle, but teaching me to change."

As the storm cleared, the sphinx plucked a spinach leaf from Lily's garden. He sniffed it cautiously, then took a bite. His eyes widened.

"It's... not terrible."

*WHOOSH!* The sphinx transformed into a shower of golden sparkles that swirled into the night sky.

At dinner the next evening, Lily tried her spinach without complaining. It still tasted like leaves, but she remembered the sphinx and smiled.

Barnaby wagged his tail, happy to share her meal.

Sometimes the greatest adventures start with being brave enough to try something new.
