The Sphinx's Secret Spring

Lily and her best friend Marco loved exploring behind their grandfather's house. One hot afternoon, they followed a glittering butterfly deep into the garden where they'd never gone before.

The butterfly landed on an ancient stone statue half-buried in flowers. Lily gasped. It was a small sphinx, just her size, with gentle eyes and wings that sparkled in the sun.

"I am the Guardian of the Spring," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "Our magical water source has dried up. Only those with pure hearts can help."

The sphinx led them to a hidden cave where a tiny spring bubbled. But something was wrong – a gloomy gray cloud hovered over the water, making it sad and sluggish.

Marco reached into his pocket. "My mom gave me this." He pulled out a bright orange vitamin she'd packed for his adventure. "She says it gives energy. Maybe the spring needs energy too?"

Lily held it in her palm, thinking. Then she did something surprising – she knelt and offered her last bite of her orange to the spring instead. "You need this more than I do."

The water sparkled. The gray cloud dissolved like morning mist. The spring bubbled with joy, sending up droplets that danced in the air.

"You gave when you could have kept," the sphinx smiled. "That is the greatest magic."

That summer, the garden bloomed more beautifully than ever. And every evening, Lily and Marco returned to sit by the spring, watching the water sparkle, knowing that kindness was the most powerful vitamin of all.
