The Sphinx's Secret Sport

Lily and Max tumbled through the bushes, their padel racquets tucked under their arms. They'd been searching for the perfect court all morning, but nobody wanted to play with two kids who kept missing the ball.

"Maybe over there," Lily pointed toward the shimmering blue lake they'd been told never to visit.

"But Mom said—" Max started.

"Just a quick look!"

To their astonishment, a perfect padel court stood right at the water's edge, its glass walls sparkling like diamonds. And someone was already playing—a magnificent sphinx with golden fur and wise, twinkling eyes.

The sphinx hit the ball against the wall, but instead of bouncing back, the ball turned into a splash of water that rained down like tiny stars. Another shot, and the ball became a butterfly. Another, and it was a bubble that floated away on the breeze.

"Wow!" Max breathed.

The sphinx's ears twitched. She turned, and instead of asking a riddle like in the stories, she smiled and waved them over.

"I'm Saphira," she said, her voice sounding like wind chimes. "Care to play?"

Lily stepped forward nervously. "But... we're not very good."

"Neither was I," Saphira winked. "I'm thousands of years old, and I still miss sometimes."

They played until sunset, and every miss became something magical—a splash of water that turned into flowers, a giggle that became a rainbow. Saphira taught them that games weren't about being perfect; they were about joy and friendship.

"Will you teach us tomorrow?" Max asked as they left.

"Every day," the sphinx promised. "But you must tell no one. This water court is our secret garden of wonder."

That night, Lily and Max fell asleep dreaming of sphinxes and water magic, knowing they'd found something better than winning—a friend who showed them that mistakes could be beautiful.
