The Sphinx's Secret Spell

Lily's dog Barnaby always barked at the old stone statue in their garden — the one with a lion's body, eagle's wings, and a wise human face. "That's a sphinx," Grandma had said. "Ancient and magical."

One moonlit night, Lily peeked through her window and gasped. The sphinx's stone eyes were glowing green! It moved slowly, stiffly, like a sleepy puppet. A purple mist swirled around it.

"I'm under a zombie spell," the sphinx rumbled, its voice sounding like grinding stones. "An evil wizard trapped me centuries ago. I can only move at night, and even then, barely at all."

Lily grabbed her toy spyglass from her dresser. "I'll help you!" She tiptoed outside, Barnaby trotting bravely beside her.

"The wizard's spell can only be broken by three things," the sphinx said. "First, the courage of a true friend. Second, the loyalty of a faithful companion. And third..." The sphinx paused. "The magic of enchanted spinach grown under a shooting star."

Lily's eyes widened. "Grandma's garden!" She and Barnaby rushed to the vegetable patch. There, glowing softly among the regular plants, was a single sparkling spinach leaf.

The sphinx smiled (which looked like stones shifting). "You found it!" Lily carefully placed the glowing spinach on the sphinx's paw. Purple light burst outward like fireworks!

The stone fell away, revealing golden feathers and shimmering fur. The sphinx stretched its powerful wings, free at last!

"Thank you, little spy," it whispered. "And thank you, brave dog." Barnaby wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled.

The sphinx soared into the starry sky, leaving behind a single golden feather. Lily kept it forever — proof that even a small girl with a big heart and a silly dog could break ancient spells.

"Next time," Lily told Barnaby, "let's solve mysteries during the day. I need my sleep!" Barnaby barked in agreement.
