The Sphinx's Secret Riddle

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially the hidden corner behind the rosebushes. One sunny afternoon, she discovered something magical—a stone sphinx with emerald eyes perched beside an old swimming pool.

"Hello, young one," the sphinx rumbled, its voice like gentle thunder. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to visit my pool of wishes."

Lily's eyes widened. "You can talk?"

The sphinx smiled. "I can do many things. But first, you must solve my riddle. What is orange like the sun, grows on trees, and makes the sweetest juice?"

"An orange!" Lily shouted, pulling a juicy orange from her pocket. She'd packed it for her afternoon snack.

"Correct!" The sphinx nodded. "Now, touch the pool with something precious to you."

Lily hesitated. Her iPhone contained all her favorite games and photos. Could she part with it, even for a moment? She took a deep breath and gently touched the phone to the water's surface.

Ripples of silver light spread across the pool. Images appeared—children playing, friends sharing secrets, families laughing together.

"The pool shows what truly matters," the sphinx whispered. "Now, one final test. Try something new, even if you think you won't like it."

Grandmother called from the kitchen. "Lily! Lunch is ready! I made your favorite—" she paused, "—spinach salad!"

Lily had always refused to eat spinach. It looked like little green leaves that surely tasted like yuck. But the sphinx watched her with twinkling eyes.

"I'll try it," Lily promised.

At lunch, Lily took a tiny bite of the spinach salad. Her eyes lit up. It was delicious—crunchy and fresh with a yummy dressing.

"I did it!" she ran back to the sphinx. "I tried spinach and I liked it!"

"Brave and curious," the sphinx said. "You've proven yourself. Touch the pool again."

This time, the water showed Lily herself—stronger, braver, surrounded by friends. The sphinx had taught her that being brave meant trying new things, and that real magic wasn't about wishes, but about courage and friendship.

From that day on, Lily visited her sphinx friend often, sharing oranges and stories by the magical pool. And she always tried new foods—even green ones!
