The Sphinx's Secret Riddle

Lily discovered the velvet hat tucked away in her grandmother's attic. It was purple with silver stars stitched around the brim. When she placed it on her head, something magical happened—the attic walls shimmered like rainbow soap bubbles.

Her dog Barnaby, a scruffy terrier with one floppy ear, barked excitedly. He could see it too! A swirling golden doorway appeared where the old mirror used to hang.

Through the doorway, they tumbled into a garden where flowers hummed soft melodies and trees whispered secrets. In the center sat a sphinx—but not like the ones in books. This sphinx was the size of a kitten, with fur like copper curls and emerald eyes that sparkled with mischief.

"You're wearing the Magic Thinking Hat!" squeaked the sphinx, doing a joyful spin. "I'm Cleo, and I've been waiting SO long for someone imaginative enough to find it!"

Cleo explained that the hat had been lost for a hundred years. Without it, the magical garden was slowly fading because children had forgotten how to dream big dreams.

"We need your help," Cleo said seriously. "The garden's magic comes from children's wishes. But first, you must solve my riddle: What has hands but cannot clap, a face but cannot smile, and tells stories without speaking?"

Barnaby whined and pawed at the ground. Lily looked down at him happily wagging his tail, then suddenly gasped. "A clock!"

Cleo did cartwheels of joy. "Correct! You're not just brave—you're clever too!"

Together, they planted Lily's wishes: that every child would have a friend like Barnaby, that curiosity would never end, and that magic would always exist for those who believed.

The garden burst into bloom. Lily's hat glowed warm and wonderful.

"Come back anytime," Cleo called as Lily and Barnaby stepped through the golden doorway. "But remember—the real magic isn't in the hat. It's in YOU."

Back in the attic, Lily removed the hat. It looked ordinary again, but she knew better. Some secrets are meant to be kept between friends—especially the magical ones.
