The Sphinx's Secret Riddle

Lila loved visiting her grandmother's garden in Hawaii. It was filled with swaying palm trees and the sweetest papaya trees. But Lila's favorite spot was the small pond near the garden's edge, where a tiny orange goldfish named Fin swam in endless circles.

One afternoon, dark clouds gathered. Lightning flashed across the sky, turning the afternoon as bright as morning for just a heartbeat. In that flash of light, Lila noticed something she'd never seen before—a stone sphinx half-buried beneath the largest palm tree!

The sphinx had the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman. Its eyes seemed to sparkle like the lightning that had revealed it.

"Young one," the sphinx spoke, her voice like rustling leaves, "I have waited many years for someone with a curious heart. Answer my riddle, and I shall grant you one wish."

Lila's eyes widened. "What's the riddle?"

"I have fins but cannot swim," the sphinx said mysteriously. "I have the brightest colors but no canvas to paint. I am small but hold great wisdom. What am I?"

Lila thought carefully. She looked around the garden—palm trees waving, papayas ripening, thunder rumbling in the distance. Then she remembered Fin, swimming alone in his small pond, always there to listen when she needed to talk.

"A goldfish!" Lila exclaimed.

The sphinx smiled, and lightning flashed again as the stone guardian began to transform. She became a beautiful spirit of light and wind.

"You have answered well," the sphinx said. "What is your wish?"

Lila looked at Fin, swimming alone in his small pond. "Could Fin have a friend? Nobody should have to swim alone."

The sphinx nodded approvingly. With a wave of her hand and another crack of lightning, two more goldfish appeared in the pond—silver and blue, shimmering like magic.

"Friendship is the greatest treasure," the sphinx whispered as she faded back into stone, waiting for the next curious heart.

From that day on, whenever lightning flashed across the garden, Lila would smile, knowing that magic lived in unexpected places—if only you had the heart to look for it.
