The Sphinx's Secret Riddle
Lily loved sitting beneath the ancient palm tree in her grandmother's garden. Its long, green fronds danced in the warm breeze, whispering secrets to anyone who listened closely. One afternoon, something extraordinary happened.
A clever little fox with bright orange fur and curious eyes trotted right up to where Lily sat. The fox didn't run away like foxes usually did. Instead, it sat beside her and purred like a kitten!
"Hello there," Lily whispered, scratching behind the fox's velvety ears. "Are you going to be my new friend?"
The fox nodded its head enthusiastically, then turned and looked back at the palm tree expectantly. Lily noticed something she'd never seen before — carved into the tree trunk was the tiny face of a sphinx, complete with mysterious emerald eyes.
Suddenly, the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes: "Young friend, why have you visited me today?"
Lily gasped but didn't run away. "I didn't know you were here! I just love sitting under this tree."
The sphinx smiled. "For fifty years, I've waited for someone who visits for friendship, not for wishes. You have a kind heart. What gift would you like?"
Lily thought carefully. She could ask for toys, or treasure, or magical powers. But she looked at the fox, who gazed up at her with adoring eyes.
"Can my friend stay with me?" Lily asked. "And can we always understand each other?"
The sphinx's emerald eyes sparkled. "Granted. But remember — true friendship needs no magic, only kindness and patience."
From that day on, Lily and the fox had wonderful adventures. They discovered that the sphinx had been lonely, and by choosing friendship over greed, Lily had given the sphinx something too — the joy of helping others. And every evening, they all sat together under the palm tree, watching the stars come out, grateful for the magic of kindness.
