The Sphinx's Secret Riddle

Lily loved climbing the old palm tree in her backyard. Its rough bark scratched her hands, but she didn't mind. From the top, she could see the whole world—or at least her whole world of houses, gardens, and the distant sparkle of the ocean.

One evening, as the sky turned purple with a coming storm, Lily spotted something strange near the palm tree's roots. A creature was curled there, half-hidden in the shadows. It had the body of a lion, powerful and golden, and the head of a wise-looking person with twinkling eyes.

"You're not scared?" the creature asked. Its voice sounded like rustling leaves.

Lily shook her head. "Are you a sphinx? Like from my storybooks?"

The sphinx stretched and yawned. "I am Sefira. I've been sleeping under this palm tree for three hundred years. Your laughter woke me."

Lily's eyes went wide. "Three hundred years?"

"Time moves differently when you're a guardian sphinx," Sefira said mysteriously. "I protect special places, and this tree is one of them. But I can only stay if someone proves worthy through my riddle."

"What riddle?" Lily asked, her heart beating fast.

Sefira's eyes glowed as lightning flashed across the darkening sky. "I have cities, but no houses. I have mountains, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. What am I?"

Lily thought hard. She thought about maps she'd seen in school, about treasure maps in pirates' stories. "A MAP!" she shouted triumphantly.

Sefira smiled, and golden sparkles filled the air. "Correct, clever child. Now, would you like to be my friend?"

Lily's smile could have lit up the whole night. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"

From that day on, whenever thunder rumbled and lightning danced across the sky, Lily would run to her palm tree, where Sefira would appear to share stories, riddles, and the magic of being a true friend. And every night, Lily would fall asleep wondering: what other magical secrets were hiding right in her own backyard?
