The Sphinx's Secret Riddle
Lily was seven years old and had the most wonderful dog in the world. Barnaby was a golden retriever with fur as soft as sunshine and a heart full of adventure. Every Saturday, they explored the woods behind their house, but today was different. Today, the fog swirled in mysterious patterns, and the path led somewhere new.
The trees parted to reveal a crystal-blue lake, its surface smooth as glass except for ripples that sparkled like tiny stars. Barnaby's tail wagged excitedly as he bounded toward the water's edge. But this wasn't just any lake — sitting on an island in the center was the biggest sphinx Lily had ever seen, made entirely of smooth gray stone with wings tucked against its sides.
"Welcome, young one," the sphinx spoke, and its voice sounded like wind through ancient trees. "I've waited many years for someone brave enough to visit."
Lily's heart pounded, but Barnaby licked the sphinx's stone paw, and suddenly the creature's eyes twinkled.
"I see you've brought a true friend," the sphinx said. "Answer my riddle, and you'll discover why this water never grows still."
Lily nodded bravely. "I'm ready."
"What runs but never walks, has a mouth but never talks, has a bed but never sleeps?"
Lily thought hard. She looked at the rippling water, at Barnaby's reflection, and suddenly it clicked. "A river!"
"Correct!" The sphinx's stone face broke into a gentle smile. "Long ago, I was lonely guarding these waters. But now I see that the real magic isn't in secrets kept — it's in friends found."
The sphinx touched Lily's forehead with a stone paw, and suddenly Lily understood: the water rippled because it was laughing, joyous from all the visitors who came by. The sphinx hadn't been hiding magic — it had been waiting to share it.
"Come back anytime," the sphinx called as Lily and Barnaby walked home. "And remember: the best adventures are the ones you share."
That night, Lily dreamed of water that sparkled with laughter, and when she woke, she found Barnaby sleeping at the foot of her bed, his paws twitching as if chasing sphinxes through magical woods. Some adventures, she realized, are just beginning.
