The Sphinx's Secret Riddle

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's dusty attic. On rainy afternoons, she would climb the creaky wooden stairs and discover treasures from long ago. Old photograph albums, fancy hats with feathers, and mysterious boxes filled with buttons and ribbons.

One Tuesday, Lily found something she had never noticed before. Behind a stack of old quilts sat a small wooden door, no bigger than a lunchbox. Curious, she turned the tiny brass handle.

The door swung open with a soft click, revealing a swirling tunnel of sparkling lights. Without thinking, Lily stepped through—and found herself in a magical garden where flowers hummed gentle melodies and trees whispered secrets in the breeze.

In the center of the garden sat a magnificent stone sphinx with the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman. Her eyes sparkled like tiny stars.

"Welcome, young traveler," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I have guarded this garden for one thousand years. My only friend is a lonely goldfish who lives in that crystal pond. But the goldfish has stopped swimming, and I cannot make her happy again."

Lily looked at the pond. A beautiful orange goldfish floated motionless in the water, looking very sad indeed.

"What's wrong with her?" Lily asked.

"She needs a true friend to play with," the sphinx said. "But I cannot leave my post to join her in the water. I have tried asking other creatures, but none stay. Perhaps you can solve my riddle and help us both."

"I'll try!" Lily said bravely.

The sphinx smiled. "Here is my riddle: I have four legs but cannot run. I have a wonderful nose but never smell flowers. I am loyal to the end and will always be your best friend. What am I?"

Lily thought hard. Four legs but can't run? A wonderful nose? Loyal and always friendly?

Suddenly, she remembered her own pet at home. "A dog!" she exclaimed. "The answer is a dog!"

The sphinx clapped her paws together delightedly. "Correct! You are wise and kind. Perhaps you can help in another way."

Lily's own dog, Buster, had followed her through the tiny door without her noticing. Now the golden retriever trotted forward, tail wagging happily.

"Hello there!" the sphinx said. "Would you be the goldfish's friend?"

Buster barked joyfully and splashed right into the crystal pond. The orange goldfish immediately began swimming around him, darting and playing. For the first time in years, she looked happy.

"They're friends!" Lily cheered.

"Thank you," the sphinx said warmly. "You have taught me something important. Sometimes, the best friends are the ones we never expected. And true friendship can bridge any difference—even between a dog and a fish."

That evening, Lily and Buster returned home with a special gift from the sphinx: a small pouch of magical crystals. Whenever she sprinkled them in her goldfish bowl at home, her fish would dance happily, reminding her of the magical day she learned that friendship comes in all shapes and sizes.

And sometimes, on rainy afternoons, Lily would open the tiny wooden door again to visit her sphinx friend and watch Buster splash happily in the crystal pond with his fish friend, both of them proving that true friendship knows no boundaries.
