The Sphinx's Secret Riddle
Lily's golden retriever, Buster, was the most curious **dog** in the neighborhood. He'd sniff every flower and chase every butterfly, but today he led Lily somewhere she'd never explored before—the old overgrown garden behind Mrs. Higgins' house.
Pushing through vines taller than herself, Lily gasped. There, half-hidden beneath climbing roses, sat a stone statue. But not just any statue—it was a miniature **sphinx**, no bigger than a garden gnome, with emerald eyes that seemed to twinkle in the dappled sunlight.
"Who wakes me from my hundred-year nap?" the sphinx spoke, her voice like wind chimes. Lily stepped back, but Buster wagged his tail happily.
"I'm Lily, and this is Buster!"
The sphinx stretched her stone wings. "I am Cleopatra, guardian of the Secret Garden. Long ago, a wizard cast a sleeping spell on me. Only a child with a pure heart and a loyal friend can break it."
Lily's heart pounded. "What must we do?"
Cleopatra smiled mysteriously. "Answer my riddle: I have no voice, yet I tell stories. I have no hands, yet I create masterpieces. I grow longer with every tale, shorter with every cut. What am I?"
Lily thought hard, twisting a piece of her own **hair** around her finger. Buster nudged her hand, as if encouraging her. Then it clicked—hair grew like stories, and you could cut it like... no, that wasn't right.
Wait. Stories. Masterpieces. Growing longer with every tale.
"A yarn!" Lily exclaimed. "Like the yarn grandmas use to knit!"
Cleopatra's stone body began to shimmer. "Correct!" As the sphinx transformed into a tiny, glowing creature, flowers bloomed everywhere. "You've broken the spell!"
"But why did you need us?" Lily asked.
"Because," Cleopatra said softly, "the greatest magic isn't in riddles or spells—it's in the friendship between a girl and her dog, and the courage to explore the unknown."
From that day on, Lily and Buster visited their magical friend often, learning that the best adventures are the ones you share with someone who loves you.
