The Sphinx's Secret Riddle

Lily was the best spy in all of Orange Blossom Lane. Every morning, she would creep through her garden with her magnifying glass, spying on butterflies and ladybugs. Her favorite spot was beneath the old orange tree, where golden fruits hung like tiny suns.

One Tuesday, something extraordinary caught Lily's eye. A creature no bigger than a mango was perched on an orange branch. It had the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and the face of a wise child. A sphinx!

The sphinx stretched out its paw toward a ripe orange. Lily held her breath. She had read about sphinxes in her storybook—they were famous for asking riddles!

"I spy with my little eye," the sphinx suddenly spoke, "something that starts with O and grows on trees."

Lily stepped forward. "An orange!"

The sphinx smiled. "Correct. I am Cleo, and I've been waiting for someone clever enough to find me."

"Why were you hiding?" Lily asked, reaching out her hand. Cleo hopped into her palm, light as a feather.

"People are always too busy to notice small magic," Cleo explained. "They look at their phones instead of orange blossoms. They rush instead of wondering."

Lily nodded thoughtfully. She had been rushing a lot lately, rushing to school, rushing to finish homework.

"I have one more riddle," Cleo said. "What's the best treasure you can never buy in a store?"

Lily thought about her garden, the oranges, the sunshine, and now this new friend. "Friendship?"

"Exactly," Cleo purred. "And you found it because you took time to look."

From that day on, Lily still spied on secrets in her garden, but she never rushed anymore. She learned that the best magic isn't hidden—it's just waiting for someone with open eyes and an open heart to find it. And sometimes, the most wonderful discoveries are small enough to fit right in the palm of your hand.
